From the end of 2025 and into early 2026, all major cell providers - 2degrees, One NZ, and Spark - will be shutting down their 3G networks. This means devices that rely solely on 3G will stop working.
This shift will impact thousands of people, especially those already experiencing digital exclusion.
You can read more about the shutdown on our CommunityNet Aotearoa resource here.
Digital Equity Coalition Aotearoa (DECA) is seeking input to understand how this shutdown will affect communities and individuals across the motu.
Having already heard from many in the community who may be a risk of disconnection, DECA want to strengthen their advocacy and offerings by hearing from more of you as well.
They have created a short survey covering the 3G shutdown and broader digital access issues.
You can find the DECA survey here:
DECA invite you to a 3G Shutdown & Digital Access Hui - a space to explore what support our communities need as Aotearoa transitions away from 3G.
Whether you're working on the ground or feeling the impact firsthand, your voice matters.
This hui is a chance to kōrero about the real-life impacts of the 3G shutdown, share what you’re seeing on the ground, and help shape a collective response to digital exclusion. Craig Young from TUANZ will join DECA’s Victoria MacLennan to answer your questions.
[DECA strongly encourage you to complete the survey beforehand – it’ll help guide the conversation]
