Privacy Law in the digital age
The Privacy Act changes apply from 1 December 2020. The changes focus on protecting people's personal information and reflect changes in technology and how business is done online and offline.
If your organisation collects people's personal information you need to know that:
- People have a right to access their information (you can't destroy personal information if someone asks for information held about them).
- You must report serious breaches of privacy (report breaches to 'NotifyUs').
- You must protect the personal information you hold (check that personal information shared with overseas companies has similar protection to NZ).
You can find information and resources about the changes on the Privacy Commissioner's website here. There are e-learning modules, posters, a podcast series, and videos. It's also a good idea to appoint a privacy officer to work on privacy issues in your organisation.
